What are identity checks?

Identity checks are a set of checks used to verify a person’s identity, validate personal details, or screen for potential financial crime risks. They typically verify identity documents, confirm personal details such as address, use biometric matching to check the person is genuine, and screen against risk indicators or watchlists. Together, these checks help organisations trust an individual’s identity, meet regulatory requirements, and reduce the risk of fraud, financial crime and impersonation.

Types of check

There are three types of check. You can only send the checks your company has been approved for:

Check type

What it includes

ID (Identity Document)

Liveness test and matching against your records

KYC (Know Your Customer)

Adds address, date of birth, age, credit activity and mortality checks

AML (Anti-Money Laundering)

Adds PEP (politically exposed persons) screening and sanctions screening

Who can use identity checks?

To send checks, you'll need:

  • A Mailock Pro licence
  • Your company to be approved through our credentialling process
  • Your Mailock account to be enabled to use the checks
  • Two-factor authentication (2FA) set up on your account

About credentialling

Identity checks give access to sensitive personal data, so we only enable them for legitimate businesses with a lawful reason to use them. Before switching them on, we verify your organisation, understand how you plan to use the service, and confirm you meet the necessary eligibility and compliance requirements.

Approval is given separately for each type of check, so a company may be approved for some checks but not others. For example, a company may be approved for ID only, or for ID and KYC.

Once a company has been approved to use identity checks, we’ll enable them for each user your company owner has chosen.

Each person sending identity checks must have their own Mailock Pro licence. Identity checks can't be sent from a shared address or generic inbox, as every check needs a clear audit trail showing who sent it. This is an important part of compliance, and we'll check this with you during credentialling.

If you're a company owner or administrator, email salessupport@beyondencryption.com to start using identity checks, give more users access, or add check types.
